Resolution No.(47): “Ruling on Giving Cash Prizes to Encourage the Audience to Attend Football Matches“

Date: 15/10/1421 AH corresponding to 10/1/2001 AD.

The Board has received the following question:

What is the ruling of Sharia on organizing a program for cash and in-kind prizes through stadium entering tickets, in accordance with the following:

The first part of the ticket:

Cash prizes through "scratch and win" to motivate sport fans to purchase tickets to attend matches. This idea also promotes tickets and makes them more desirable and so the ordinary people will be encouraged to buy them and attend matches.

The second part of the ticket:

This part is for entering matches, and there will be in-kind prize drawing during matches to encourage the audience to attend.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the sponsoring company will provide gifts in return for placing its logo or advertisements on the ticket.

Answer: All success is due to Allah.

The Board deems that this activity is permissible within the following terms:

1- The price of the ticket doesn`t exceed that determined by the Jordanian Football Federation because of the prizes, so that no extra money is charged against participating in the prize drawing.

2- Making sure that the prizes are provided by the sponsor.

3- The ticket must be purchased with the sole intention of attending the match. And Allah Knows Best.

Summarized Fatawaa

I swear that I will leave the religion of Allah if I return to smoking" and then returned to smoking. What is the ruling?

Whoever conditions disbelief on something and intends to disbelieve if it happens, he becomes a disbeliever immediately. Therefore, you must pronounce the two testimonies of faith (Shahada) and reconcile with your wife if she is in her waiting period (Iddah). It is recommended to consult the Department of Fatwa for further guidance. And Allah Knows Best.

In our region in southern Oman, specifically in the city of Taqah, there is a mosque that they say was built hundreds of years ago. This mosque is surrounded by graves, meaning it is in the middle and the graves are around it. People in our area differ, with some considering it permissible and others considering it forbidden to pray there. Moreover, my grandmother saw in a dream that she entered this mosque..."

Praying in this mosque is valid and and there is reprehensibility in its location so long as no grave exist within it. Besides, Sharia rulings aren't derived out of dreams. And Allah Knows Best.

Is it permissible to pay the Zakah (obligatory charity) for settling the debt of a deceased relative?

It is impermissible to pay the Zakah for settling the debt of the deceased since Zakah is paid to eligible recipients who are alive. As for the debts of the deceased, they are to be settled from the estate before dividing it amongst the heirs, but if the deceased didn`t leave an estate, then it is desirable for his/her heirs to settle those debts if they can afford them. And Allah Knows Best.

Is it permissible for my brother, whom I had suckled, to conclude a marriage contract between his daughter and my son?

Such marriage is impermissible since one`s nephew in this situation is considered an uncle to one`s daughter; consequently, he is the brother of her father by suckling. In such cases, the people in question should go to court to prove the suckling.
