Question :

An organization collects plastic caps, recycles them for the purposes of sustainability and environmental protection, and allocates the proceeds to support children with disabilities, specifically those afflicted with polio. Is this considered a form of charity?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

The preservation of the environment is among the issues that have received care from the Islamic Shariah. We find a number of Quranic verses addressing this topic, and similarly, we find a collection of noble Prophetic Hadiths on the matter. Among the Quranic texts that command the development of the earth and the preservation of the environment are the words of Allah, the Most High {which mean}: "And when he turns away [from you], his effort is to spread corruption throughout the land and destroy crops and livestock. And Allah does not like corruption." [Al-Baqarah/205] And His saying {which means}: "And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation." [Al-A'raf/56].

From the noble Prophetic Sunnah, it is narrated by Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If the Hour is established and one of you has a palm shoot in his hand, let him plant it." [Narrated by Imam Ahmad] Also, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no Muslim who plants a tree or sows a crop, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, but it is counted as a charity for him." [Agreed upon]

In addition, the avenues of goodness and charity are numerous and diverse, encompassing every recognized good that the Shariah has approved and encouraged. Every act of recognized goodness is considered a charity for which a person is rewarded and recompensed, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Every act of kindness is a charity. Indeed, among the acts of kindness are meeting your brother with a cheerful face and pouring water from your bucket into your brother's vessel." [Narrated by Al-Bukhari]

In conclusion, such an initiative, which involves collecting plastic containers for recycling and allocating its proceeds to support children with disabilities, specifically those afflicted with polio, is considered one of the avenues of goodness falling under the concept of recommended charities for which a Muslim is rewarded. This is due to its inherent meanings of environmental preservation and assisting those in need. It is among the good practices (Sunnah Hasanah) to which Islam has called, as mentioned in the Hadith where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards." [Narrated by Muslim]. And Allah, the Most High, knows best.
