Ramadan isn't like any Other Month

Dr. Mufti Sa'eid Farhan

Allah, the Exalted, created the months and distinguished some over others, assigning virtues to each. Among these, Ramadan stands as the master of the months, and in it, He mandated one of the pillars of Islam. His wisdom necessitated that this act of worship holds a high status with Allah as it does among His servants. This great act of worship has distinguished itself from other acts with many characteristics, and I summarize some of these distinctions in the following aspects:

First: Allah, The Exalted, has elevated the status of fasting by attributing it to Himself. As narrated by Al-Bukhari and others, Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said in what he narrates from his Lord, The Exalted: "All actions of the son of Adam are for him, except for fasting; it is for Me, and I will reward for it." This distinction is unique to fasting, with due reverence to other acts of worship. Thus, the fasting person possesses a noble spirit, high aspiration, and strong determination in their fasting, as they know that this fast is for Allah. They endure all hardships and discomfort to complete their fast in a manner that pleases the Exalted.

Second: Regarding reward: Allah has established a unique reward and accountability for fasting that differs from other acts of worship. Just as Allah has distinguished fasting and attributed it to Himself, He has also granted it a tremendous reward. He says in the Qudsi hadith: "And I will reward for it." The reward corresponds to the one who gives it, which is Allah, The Exalted. Fasting is half of patience, as it has been narrated from him (peace be upon him) in the hadith reported by Ibn Majah and others. Allah Says (What means): "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account" [Az-Zumar/10]. Thus, the fasting person will receive their reward without account, and as Imam Al-Ghazali mentioned in [Ihya Ulum Ad-Din] regarding fasting: "Its reward has exceeded the limits of estimation and account." Moreover, Allah has granted the fasting person a gate among the gates of Paradise, which is the Gate of Al-Rayyan.

Third: Fasting is an act of worship that only Allah knows about; it is far removed from showing off and hypocrisy. Just as Allah's wisdom decreed that fasting is for Him, it also required that the fasting person is solely with Allah, engaged in a worship that no one else sees. Allah has honored fasting by keeping it free from any impurities such as showing off, hypocrisy, or fame, making it an act of worship hidden from people, unseen, and unrecognized.

Fourth: Regarding the rulings of Sharia: Fasting differs from other acts of worship in certain rulings. The intention for fasting must precede the act, meaning that the intention should come before the act of worship, even if only by a short time. In contrast, for other acts of worship, the intention must accompany the action, and it is invalid if the intention precedes the action.

Fifth: Despite the high status of fasting and its great reward, it is an act of worship based on abstaining rather than action. This grants fasting an additional advantage, which is the ability to combine fasting with another act of worship. The fasting person prays, reads the Quran, and thus fulfills multiple acts of worship simultaneously. All of this is a benefit for the fasting person, increasing their reward and status. All praise is due to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds.

Summarized Fatawaa

What is the ruling on someone who is uncertain whether he omitted one of the ab‘āḍ of the prayer, such as being uncertain whether he omitted the first tashahhud?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The ab‘āḍ include the middle tashahhud and the qunūt in Fajr prayer — for which sujūd as-sahw (the prostration of forgetfulness) is prescribed if left out. Whoever is uncertain, during the prayer, whether he omitted one of these elements, should proceed on the assumption that he did not perform it, and should perform sujūd as-sahw accordingly.
It is stated in ‘Umdat as-Sālik (p. 63): "If he is uncertain... whether he omitted a specific ab‘āḍ element, or whether he performed sujūd as-sahw, or whether he prayed three or four rak‘ahs — he proceeds on the assumption that he did not do it, and performs sujūd as-sahw."
The original principle (al-aṣl) for someone uncertain about [having performed] the first tashahhud is that he assumes he did not perform it. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.

What is the validity of the formula for sending blessings upon our master Muḥammad ﷺ: *"Allāhumma ṣalli wa sallim wa bārik ‘alā sayyidinā Muḥammad wa ‘alā ālihi, ‘adada kamāli-Llāhi wa kamā yalīqu bikamālihi"* ("O Allah, send blessings, peace, and grace upon our master Muḥammad and his family, by the number of Allah's perfection, and as befits His perfection")?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
It is permissible to send blessings upon our master, the Prophet ﷺ, using the formula mentioned in the question, since sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ is an act of devotion legislated in its basic essence, without a specific prescribed wording required outside of the formal prayer itself. It is therefore valid to perform it outside of prayer using any formula. This particular formula involves multiplying the blessings sent upon the Chosen Prophet ﷺ to the number of the perfections of Allah, the Exalted — which are limitless — so that, by Allah's permission, its reward and benefit never cease.
The meaning of "the number of Allah's perfection" is that it is without limit, making the blessings sent boundless, corresponding to His perfection, Glorified is He, which cannot be enumerated or counted. This formula is analogous to the words of our Greatest Prophet ﷺ, as related in the authentic ḥadīth narrated by Imam Muslim: the Prophet ﷺ said to Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhā): "Indeed, I said four phrases after you [left], three times, which, if weighed against everything you have said since this morning, would outweigh them: Subḥān Allāhi wa biḥamdihi, ‘adada khalqihi, wa riḍā nafsihi, wa zinata ‘arshihi, wa midāda kalimātihi" (Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him, by the number of His creation, by His pleasure, by the weight of His Throne, and by the extent of His words). And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.

What is the ruling on performing the Duha (forenoon) prayer before its time has begun, because I go to school early in the morning?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah.
The Duha (forenoon) prayer is not valid if performed before its time has begun. Its time starts when the sun has risen to a noticeable height, that is, approximately fifteen minutes after sunrise, and it ends when the sun reaches its zenith (zawāl), shortly before the Dhuhr (noon) prayer. It is stated in Mughni al-Muhtaj (Vol.1/p.455): “Its time is from the rising of the sun [to a spear’s height] until the zenith.”
Accordingly, the Duha prayer is not valid if offered before the sun has risen, and its time remains open until just before Dhuhr. It may be performed at any time at school, during the break between classes or during recess. And Allah Almighty knows best.

How should a person who is afflicted with continued major ritual impurity (incontinence of urine, bleeding outside the monthly period) perform ablution?

Such a person should make ablution for every prayer after its due time and after removing impurities from their body and outfit, and should place a fresh diaper whenever needed so as for the impurity not to spread out. They should also perform prayer immediately even if incontinence of urine continued, and should repeat the aforementioned for every obligatory prayer, then perform optional prayer as much as they want.
