A Statement on the Grave Sin and Crime of Mixing the Quran with Music

The General Iftaa` Department clarifies that mixing the recitation of the Quran with melodies, music, and rhythmic beats accompanied by musical instruments, singing, and dancing is one of the greatest sins and is strictly prohibited. This is a grave mockery and a contemptuous act towards the Quran. It is a futile attempt to distort the meanings of the Quranic verses and to diminish its significance in the hearts of believers. Allah Says (What means): "And when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and mocked, do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hellfire altogether." [An-Nisa'/140].

Muslims are obligated to believe in the Quran, to honor it, and to hold it in the highest esteem, whether in speech, writing, or calligraphy. Allah Says (What means): "And whoever honors the symbols of Allah - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts." [Al-Hajj/32]. Muslims must avoid any word, action, or belief that contradicts the respect and reverence due to the Quran.

Allah, The Exalted, has clearly stated in His Book, addressing the Prophet and his nation, the importance of preserving the recitation of the Quran as it was revealed. Allah Says (What means): "Do not move your tongue with it to hasten through it. Indeed, upon Us is its collection and [the responsibility for] its recitation. So when We have recited it, then follow its recitation. Then it is upon Us to explain it." [Al-Qiyamah/16-19]. These verses clearly indicate that the Quran is to be recited as it was revealed, and no deviation is permissible, even due to haste in recitation.

The recitation of the Quran is a fixed and continuous Islamic tradition that has been transmitted from generation to generation, from our time to the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them; from them to the Prophet, peace be upon him; from him to Gabriel, peace be upon him, and from him to the Almighty Lord. Exactly as Allah intended for this great Book to be recited.

Therefore, it is forbidden for any believer in Allah, His Messenger, and His Book to spread anything that is unbecoming of the Quran or to contribute to its promotion, preparation, presentation, or financing. This is because it is a deviation from the path of Allah, a disregard for sacred things, and a violation of prohibitions. Rather, every Muslim must preserve the Quran, teach it to others as it was revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and as it has been transmitted by the nation. Our enemies will not succeed in their plots and their evil intentions, for Allah, The Exalted, Says (What means): "Indeed, it is We who have sent down the reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian." [Al-Hijr/9].

We ask Allah, the Exalted, to enable us to fulfill this great honor by honoring His Book, preserving it, reciting it, and acting upon it in the correct manner. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

Summarized Fatawaa

What are the legal and religious consequences for a charitable organization in the event that a sacrificial animal is damaged or spoiled after slaughter?

All praise is due to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.
Charitable organizations entrusted with slaughtering sacrificial animals (uḍḥiyyah) and distributing their meat on behalf of their owners are obligated to safeguard the meat from spoilage, damage, theft, and any other harm. This is because such organizations act as agents (wukalā') on behalf of those offering the sacrifice, and an agent holds what is entrusted to them in trust (amānah) — whether they receive a wage for their work or act on a voluntary basis.
If the sacrificial animal is damaged after slaughter during the processes of packaging, transportation, or storage due to negligence or oversight — whether on the part of the organization's own staff overseeing the operation, or on the part of third parties contracted by the organization such as transport or shipping companies — then liability falls upon the negligent party, who is required to compensate for the value of the sacrifice. It is not permissible to cover such compensation from the organization's other donor funds.
However, if the damage to the sacrificial animal occurs without any negligence in its preservation and storage on the part of any party involved in the transportation, shipping, or storage process, and is instead attributable to force majeure circumstances beyond their control, then no financial liability is borne by any party in such a case. And Allah Almighty knows best.

What is the ruling on performing the standing (qiyām) and bowing (rukū‘) portions of the prayer normally, while performing the prostration (sujūd) seated due to knee pain?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
If performing sujūd (prostration) in prayer causes the worshipper pain in the knees, then it is permissible for him to perform it through gesture (īmā') while seated, since Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has lifted hardship from His servants. On the authority of ‘Imrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (raḍiyallāhu ‘anh), he said: "I suffered from hemorrhoids, so I asked the Prophet ﷺ about [how to perform] the prayer, and he said: 'Pray standing; if you are unable, then sitting; and if you are unable, then on your side.'" [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī]
If the valid excuse later subsides, the worshipper is then obligated to perform the prayer with all its pillars and conditions fully observed — including standing, rukū‘ (bowing), and sujūd (prostration). And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.

What are the Sunnahs and etiquettes recommended for the person offering the Udhiyah?

In the Name of Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.

There are several Sunnahs (prophetic traditions) and etiquettes that are highly recommended for the person offering an Udhiyah (sacrificial offering) to observe:

First:
It is a Sunnah for anyone intending to offer a sacrifice to refrain from cutting or removing any of their hair or nails once the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah begin. This is based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the ten days [of Dhul-Hijjah] begin and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not touch any of his hair or skin." (Narrated by Muslim)

However, if someone does happen to remove any hair or nails, they have not committed a sin, and their sacrifice remains perfectly valid.

Second:
The person offering the sacrifice should ideally slaughter the animal themselves. If they are unable to do so, they should at least witness its slaughter. This is drawn from what our Master, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said to Lady Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her):

"Stand up and witness your sacrifice, for with its very first drop of blood, every sin you have committed will be forgiven." (Narrated by Al-Tabarani in his Mu'jam, Al-Hakim in his Mustadrak, and Al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan)

Third:
Face the Qiblah (the direction of prayer) at the time of slaughtering, as the Qiblah is the most honorable of directions.

Fourth:
Pronounce the name of Allah (Tasmiyah) at the moment of slaughter by saying: "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim" (In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful). Even if one forgets to say it, the meat remains lawful (Halal) to eat. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, says:

"So eat of that [meat] upon which the name of Allah has been mentioned." (Al-An'am: 118)

It is also recommended to send blessings upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and to follow it with the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar).

Fifth:
Supplicate for acceptance by saying: "Allahumma hadhihi minka wa ilayka, fa-taqabbal minni" (O Allah, this is a blessing from You and is offered back to You, so please accept it from me). This means: This sacrifice is a blessing that originated from You, and I am offering it to draw closer to You. And Allah the Almighty Knows Best.

I bought an apartment, and I am saving money to pay the remaining balance of its price — is zakāh obligatory on this money?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Zakāh is obligatory on all saved/hoarded wealth. Once the total wealth reaches the niṣāb (minimum threshold liable for zakah— equivalent to the value of 85 grams of pure 24-karat gold) and a full ḥawl (lunar year) has elapsed over it, zakāh becomes obligatory at a rate of (2.5%) — even if the wealth is earmarked for basic future needs, and even if the wealth's owner is in debt. Debt does not prevent the obligation of zakāh, nor is it deducted when calculating the zakāh due, based on the general and unrestricted wording of all the Qur'anic verses commanding zakāh, which draw no distinction between someone in debt and anyone else.
It is stated in ‘Umdat as-Sālik, from the books of the Shāfi‘ī school: "If someone possesses exactly the niṣāb, and owes an equivalent amount in debt, zakāh remains obligatory on what is in his possession, and the debt does not prevent this obligation" — meaning, the obligation of zakāh on what is presently in his possession.
The ḥawl (annual cycle) recognized for zakāh, as well as for the other sharī‘ah obligations that Allah, the Exalted, has imposed upon Muslims, is the Hijrī (lunar) year. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
