About the General Fatwa Department

The Fatwa Department of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was founded in 1921. Since its formation, it has relied upon Hanafi fatwas which were in use during the Ottoman era, and the Mufti has answered the questions of members of the public, whether they relate to worship or financial transactions or personal statutes, and it has assigned a mufti to each judge in cities both large and small. My father passed away, and he had life insurance with "Alico" for an amount of 12,500 dinars. He had paid premiums totaling 2,000 dinars. The insurance company paid us the insured amount. Should we take it, or is it considered forbidden (haram) money? And what should we do with it if it is forbidden?

You may take the amount your father paid to the company. The remaining amount is not yours. However, if you must take it, then accept it and donate it to the poor. And Allah Knows Best.

Is the Aqeeqa due on the newborn in case of dying almost a month after the delivery?

Offering Aqeeqa after a week of a newborn death is recommended.

Is Zakah (obligatory charity) obligatory on indebted merchant?

Debt doesn`t abrogate the dueness of Zakah, thus a debtor who has money, articles of merchandise, or other Zakah funds at his disposal should pay their Zakah.

I used artificial nails on my wedding night, but I was surprised to find out that they require at least a week to remove. However, I performed all my prayers during that period. What is the ruling on those prayers?

If these nails prevent water from reaching one's skin then your prayer are invalid and obliged to redo all of them. And Allah Knows Best.

Clarification from Iftaa` Department

The General Iftaa` Department celebrates along with all Jordanians the Anniversary of the Royal Accession to the Throne and takes pride in all the gains achieved since the founding of the kingdom until now. It takes this opportunity to congratulate His Majesty King Abdullah II on the twentieth anniversary of his accession to the throne. In the meantime, it stresses that it is the duty of every citizen to preserve and take part in the advancement of our country at all levels.

Moreover, the Iftaa` Department confirms that it hasn`t recently issued a statement regarding patriotic songs and calls on media to avoid using the religion for unprofessional incitement during such significant national occasions.

Therefore, you must pronounce the two testimonies of faith (Shahada) and reconcile with your wife if she is in her waiting period (Iddah). What is the ruling on cheating to pass High School Exams?

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever cheats, he/she isn`t one of us." [Moslim]. You should study hard in order to pass and excel. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.

Is it permissible to move a grave from its current location to another place, for example, from a garden in a home to a cemetery, knowing that the grave has been there for a long time, about fifty years?

It is not permissible to move the deceased from his grave, as this may result in breaking his bones and violating his sanctity. Such actions are not allowed. And Allah Knows Best.

What is the ruling on swearing a false oath by the Holy Quran?

Swearing a false oath by the Holy Quran dips the oath-taker in Hellfire, and one who had done so should turn to Allah in repentance, seek His forgiveness, give back rights to whom they belong, and pay the oath expiation.
