Statement over the Events at Al-Aqsa Mosque

21/Thul-Hijja/1435AH, corresponding to 16/10/2014AD

In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions:

The Iftaa` Department of Jordan condemns with the strongest of terms closing Al-Aqsa mosque, violating religious symbols, banning Muslims from performing Friday prayer in the Noble Sanctuary, and not allowing them to enter it. The Dept. reiterates that these provocations constitute a flagrant violation of Islamic sanctities and freedom of religion, heart the feelings of Muslims worldwide, and violate human rights as well as international human rights law.

We call upon the international community and the Islamic states in particular to shoulder their responsibilities by ending these barbaric acts. Indeed, it is the duty of every Muslim to defend Al-Aqsa mosque from different dangers and violations. Under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah the second, Jordan has dedicated all its resources for the restoration and protection of Al-Aqsa mosque. In fact, this emanates from the historical and spiritual responsibility of the Hashemite family whose ancestry traces back to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). We pray that Allah safeguards Al-Aqsa mosque and favors Muslims with taking it back. And all perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds.

Summarized Fatawaa

Must a person refrain from eating for the rest of the day if they break a fast of a vow (nadhr) or a make up fast (qada)?

Whoever observes a vowed fast (nadhr) or a makeup fast (qada) is prohibited from breaking it without a valid excuse. If they break it without a legitimate reason, they are sinful.
However, they are not required to refrain from eating for the rest of the day, because such restraint is only required out of respect for the month of Ramadan, not for other types of fasting.

Is it permissible to slaughter sacrificial animals in public squares and streets?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.

The slaughtering of sacrificial animals (udhiyah) should take place in locations designated for slaughter, such as abattoirs (slaughterhouses), or in sites allocated by the relevant authorities for this purpose.

It is not permissible to perform slaughtering in a random or haphazard manner—such as in public squares, on roadsides, or in front of houses—in a way that creates health hazards, causes public nuisance, or endangers public safety. And Allah Almighty knows best.

A group of about thirty young men will go to a farm on Friday. Is it permissible for one of us to deliver the sermon (*khuṭbah*) and lead us in the Friday prayer, or is it necessary to go to the nearest mosque?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah.
The Friday prayer (Jumuʿah) is not obligatory upon a traveler, whether his journey is long or short, if he leaves his place of residence before the time of Fajr begins, according to the Shāfiʿī school. If, however, he sets out on his journey after the Fajr adhān, then he is obliged to perform the Friday prayer, whether in his own town or in any town where the Friday prayer is held.
It is stated in Bushrā al-Karīm (Vol.1/p.383), one of the books of the Shāfiʿī school: “[The Friday prayer] is not obligatory upon a traveler on a permissible journey, whether long or short, if he departs from his place of residence before dawn.” End quote.
Accordingly, if you set out on your journey after Fajr, you are obliged to perform the Friday prayer in the mosque. The same applies if you set out after that, since you would not have fulfilled the conditions for the validity of the Friday prayer, among them: that it be attended by forty men who are free, adult (bāligh), sane, and settled residents of the place where Friday is held. It must be held within a cluster of connected buildings, whether a city, a village, or a district (liwāʾ), for what counts is the gathering of the buildings. And Allah Almighty knows best.

Can I start fasting based on the moon sighting of another country?

You must follow the moon sighting of the country you are in.
