Mawlid: Revival of the Islamic Nation

Upon the arrival of the month of Rabi Al-Awwal, Prophet Mohammad`s birth anniversary (Mawlid) arouses overwhelming emotions in the hearts of all Muslims reminding them of a history, a present reality and a future.

That history started before the Prophet (PBUH) was even born in the Arabian Peninsula. He (PBUH) is a descendent of the Prophet Ismail (PBUH) from Bani Kinana, from Quraish, from Bani Hashim; the best of the best and the noblest of tribes in respect to lineage.

While the Arabian Peninsula was preoccupied with tribal warfare, the Persians and the Romans were in the vanguard of civilizational procession; followed by the Greeks and the Indians. Those civilizations had their share of scientific, cultural and philosophical products that had a significant impact on the making of a full-fledged human civilization.

The Prophet (PBUH) was born on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, in the 'Year of the Elephant'. Upon his delivery, his Mother Aminah saw a light that illuminated what`s between the east and the west. A light that had later infiltrated the illiterate nation of the Arabian Peninsula: a light of knowledge, civilization, mercy, good morality and justice. The first verse revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) was (What means): "Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists)?" It gave life to the illiterate nation as well as the Arabian Peninsula announcing a turning point from illiteracy to knowledge, civilization, urbanization, good conduct and universal values. The Islamic civilization was so advanced that it overshined that of the Persians, Romans, Greeks and the Indians. It has established the general principles of human civilization, and liberated human beings from the yoke of slavery and despotism. This is reflected in the words of the Caliph Omar Bin Al-Khattab (May Allah Be Pleased with Him) that states: "Since when did you enslave the people though they were born from their mothers in freedom?"

Islam has also created a system for the family, and established, for humanity, the principles of fraternity, religious tolerance, equity and equality.

The contributions of the Islamic nation in the fields of science, arts, literature and philosophy have enriched the human civilization, and this was even recognized by non-Muslims. For example, The German historian Siegrid Honke wrote the book "The Sun of the Arabs Shines over the West." Will Durant has also written the book "The Story of Civilization."

In his book, "Arabs Civilization," Gustave Le Bon said: "If we take a closer look at the Arab and Muslim civilization, scientific books, inventions and arts, we arrive at the conclusion that they have the credit for the spread of knowledge in the middle ages. For over than five centuries, they were the sole source of scientific knowledge for the west. They have even civilized Europe materially, intellectually and morally, in addition to taking the lead in the field of artistic creativity."

The Islamic civilization, whose foundations were set by non-other than Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), has addressed the various intellectual, psychological, spiritual, physical and material needs of humanity.

His call to Allah was founded on the achievements of the elite Muslim scholars in different fields, such as Al-Khawarizmi, Ibn Al-Haytham, Al-Idrisi,  Al-Rāzī , Ibn Sina… and many others; where the Europeans have utilized the latter`s achievements in building their own civilization.

The orientalist George Sarton in his book: "Introduction to the History of Science", also recognized their distinguished accomplishments. He said:  "The greater portions of the tasks of the human intellect were shouldered by the Muslims: Al-Farabi is the greatest of philosophers, Al-Masoodi is the greatest of Geographers and Al-Tabari is the greatest of historians."

Yes, on this occasion we remember a past glory of the Arabs and the Muslims and feel a sense of superiority, dignity and pride. However, a quick overview of our current situation would make us feel disappointed. At present, Muslims and Arabs are living a bitter reality as division, weakness and intra-conflicts dominate them.  They have become in the rear of human civilization although they are the nation of (Read) and the seal of Messengers and Prophets.

In light of this harsh reality, we remember the beautiful attributes of our beloved Prophet (PBUH), and his tremendous efforts in elevating and uniting the Islamic nation. He (PBUH) said, "I have left two matters with you. As long as you hold to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the Sunna of His Prophet."

No matter what the case may be, The Book of Allah and the Sunna of His Prophet (PBUH) are the one and only solution for all our problems and suffice to raise our morale. Allah, The Almighty, Said (What means): "And hold fast, all together, by the rope which God (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves" [Al-Imran/103]. In addition, the Prophet (PBUH) said: "and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart." [Moslim]. Besides, Allah, The Almighty Said (What means): "Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns" [Al-Imran/140] and He Said (What means): "When will that be?" Say, "May be it will be quite soon!" [Al-Isra/`51].

Summarized Fatawaa

Does sacrificing one sheep avail for the entire household?

In the Name of Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.

Offering an Udhiyah (sacrificial offering) is a communal Sunnah (Sunnah Kifayah) for members of the same household, provided that their financial maintenance is undertaken by a single provider. By "communal Sunnah," we mean that when one person performs it, the religious recommendation is fulfilled on behalf of the entire household, though the spiritual reward itself belongs uniquely to the one who offered it.

Therefore, if any member of the household performs the sacrifice—even if it is someone who is not legally responsible for the household's expenses, such as the wife or one of the children—the recommendation is fulfilled for everyone in that home. However, the reward does not automatically extend to the other members unless the person offering the sacrifice explicitly intends to share the reward with them—similar to how performing a funeral prayer (Janazah) fulfills the communal obligation for everyone, yet the specific reward is earned by those who actually prayed.

Additionally, a single sacrifice is sufficient for a man who is married to more than one wife. And Allah the Almighty Knows Best.

What is the ruling on praying alone (munfaridan) in a row, and what should I do if I enter the mosque together with another person, and there is only a single gap in the first row with no second row present — should I fill that gap in the first row, or should I stand together with him in a new second row?

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
If a person enters [the congregation] and finds no space available in the row, it is recommended for him — after making his opening takbīr for the prayer — to gently pull someone from the row in front of him to pray alongside him, provided he senses that this person would be agreeable to it. If that person does not agree, then he prays alone, and there is no dislike attached to his doing so in that case.
If he ends up praying alone [behind the row], it is sunnah for him to stand directly behind the imam. Then, if someone else arrives, that person stands to his right; and whoever comes after them stands to his left — and so on — such that the imam remains centered in the middle of the row. This is done so that everyone attains the reward of congregational prayer.
As for the case where two people enter the prayer together, and there is a gap in the row wide enough for only one person, then the two of them should pray together in a new row [of their own], and whoever arrives after them should fill that original gap. This is because if only one of the two fills the gap, the other would end up praying alone [which is to be avoided when it can easily be prevented].
Al-Khaṭīb ash-Shirbīnī (raḥimahullāh) said in Mughnī al-Muḥtāj (Vol.1/P.494): "If he does not find space, then it is recommended for him, while still standing, to gently pull a single person from the row toward himself after making his opening takbīr — out of caution, so as to avoid the position held by some scholars that a person's prayer standing alone behind the row is not valid.
Az-Zarkashī and others said: this should only be done if it seems he would agree to it; otherwise, he should not pull anyone — indeed, doing so becomes impermissible, out of fear of causing discord (fitnah). It is recommended for the person being pulled to cooperate and agree, so that he may attain the reward of assisting in righteousness and piety (al-birr wat-taqwā). However, he should not pull one of two people [praying together] from the row, since this would cause one of them to end up praying alone. This is why the 'pulling' described here takes place only after the opening takbīr [i.e., once the person doing the pulling has already validly begun his own prayer]."
Accordingly: it is sunnah for you to pray alongside the person praying alone, and then, if someone else arrives afterward, you may go and fill the gap in the original row. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.

What is the monetary value for the expiation of an oath (Kaffarat al-Yamin)?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our Master, the Messenger of Allah.

The expiation for an oath (Kaffarat al-Yamin) consists of feeding ten (10) needy persons. This is estimated at 600 grams of rice per person. It is also permissible to pay its value in cash, which is estimated at one dinar (per person). And Allah the Exalted knows best.

What is the ruling on a woman who learns of her divorce or her husband's death after her *ʿiddah* has ended? And does the *ʿiddah* of a woman who abandoned mourning (*iḥdād*) for the whole period of the *ʿiddah*, or part of it, still end, even though she knew that abandoning it is forbidden?**

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon our master, the Messenger of Allah.
The waiting period of a widow who is not pregnant is four months and ten days, based on the saying of Allah Almighty (which means): “And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they shall wait concerning themselves for four months and ten days” [al-Baqarah/234]. If she is pregnant, her ʿiddah ends with the delivery of her child. The ʿiddah is calculated by lunar months and begins from the date of death.
If her ʿiddah ends before she learns of her husband’s death, or of his divorcing her, she does not observe the ʿiddah upon learning of it, because her ʿiddah has already ended.
It is stated in al-Bayān fī Madhhab al-Imām al-Shāfiʿī (Vol.11/p.41), one of the books of the Shāfiʿī school: “If a man divorces his wife, or dies while he is absent from her, her ʿiddah is from the time of the divorce or from the time of death. If she does not know of the divorce or the death until her ʿiddah period has ended, then her ʿiddah has ended. If she learns of it before the end of the ʿiddah period, she completes her ʿiddah counting from the time of the divorce or death.”
As for a woman who abandoned mourning throughout the ʿiddah while knowing that it is forbidden, she is sinful, although her ʿiddah has nonetheless ended. And Allah Almighty knows best.
