Question :

I`m a university professor, and sometimes I have to give extra grades to some students so that they don`t get dismissed from the university. This is in addition to encountering human and social pressure that drives me to do so?

The Answer :

Praise be to Allah, peace and blessings be upon his Messenger.

Giving grades to university students is a trust for which their teachers will be called to account on The Day of Resurrection since it involves rights necessary for earning their degrees, and since it provides a minute description of their academic competence where any change in them is a sort of forgery and falsehood. This is in addition to the fact that professors leniency in this regard undermines the academic process, and the trust in these institutions, and consequently produces a generation that is incapable of shouldering the responsibility and lacking the needed competence.

Therefore, the professors - on whose grading decisions critical outcomes are being established - have to honor what they were entrusted with through giving priority to the general interest , and not favoring certain students. They should also seek the guidance of the university`s administration and its regulations to put an end to such manipulation, or else there will be serious consequences on our society. Allah, The Almighty, Says in this regard: “O ye who believe! Betray not Allah and His messenger, nor knowingly betray your trusts.” {Al-Anfal/27}. And Allah Knows Best.
