Question :

I`m single and was proposed to by a young man who works for the Securities Commission. Actually, I don`t know much about the nature of his job or whether it is lawful or unlawful. Do I incur sin if I accept marrying him?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

If this young man`s religion and character are pleasing to you, then marry him. This is attested to in the following Hadith: because Abu Hatim Al-Muzani narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: "When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you then marry (her to) him. If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and discord (Fasad). If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and discord (Fasad)." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! What if there was something about him?" He said: "When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you then marry him." (And he (pbuh) said this) three times." {Related by Tirmithi}.

As for the ruling of Sharia on his job, We recommend that you visit the Iftaa` Department to acquaint yourself with the nature of his job and the violations of Sharia it may involve.

We also suggest that you review Fatwa No. (518). This Fatwa states that it is permissible for the wife, supposing that her husband`s job involves some sins, to receive support from him. However, it is prohibited for her to take any provisions from him in case she knew that all his money is unlawful or acquired by force. And Allah the Almighty Knows Best.
