Question :
What is the ruling on speech that mocks some jurisprudential rulings based on their subjects and addresses the latter with ridicule and sarcasm?
The Answer :
All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.
Indeed, among the major forbidden sins is belittling or mocking the divine rulings (Al-Aḥkām Al-Sharia), whether through ridicule or disparagement. It is incumbent upon every Muslim to honor the sanctity of Islamic rulings and their sources—chief among them the Noble Qur’an, the purified books of Sunna, and the fatwas of trustworthy, reputable scholars. Allah The Almighty Says (What means): "That [is so]. And whoever honors the symbols of Allah—indeed, it is from the piety of hearts." [Al-Ḥajj/32]. This is because the rulings of Sharia are a manifestation of Allah’s command, derived from authentic religious proofs based on precise intellectual and textual criteria (The Quran and the Prophetic Sunna). The sciences related to them are the noblest of all knowledge. Thus, disparaging them is among the gravest sins. Allah The Exalted Warns (What means): "And do not take the verses of Allah in jest." [Al-Baqarah/231] And He, The Most High, Says as well (What means): "And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘We were only conversing and playing.’ Say, ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’ Make no excuse—you have disbelieved after your belief.’" [At-Tawbah/65-66].
Among the glories of Islam and the beauties of its divine law is its comprehensive guidance on all matters pertaining to a Muslim – rulings, manners, and morals – so that he may proceed with clarity in his affairs, walking in guidance and tranquility from birth until death. The noble Sharia does not leave him confused, stumbling in the darkness of ignorance, whims, and desires. Rather, this radiant Law has placed him under his Lord’s guidance so that he may attain the good life.
It must be noted here that ignorance or lack of objectivity in discourse leads some to overlook the grandeur of our jurisprudential heritage. Some mistakenly reduce the entire science of Fiqh to but one of its branches, turning a blind eye to the magnificence of Islamic jurisprudence - that comprehensive system which has regulated the affairs of nations and societies, governing worship, transactions, personal status, international relations, judiciary matters, and all other chapters of this noble discipline.
Likewise, among the most essential obligations is to honor everything connected to the noble Prophetic status - the biography, noble characteristics, actions, and sayings of the Master of Creation (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). All that relates to him demonstrates nothing but the highest prophetic perfection, untainted by any deficiency or flaw. Upon him be the noblest blessings and completest peace. Whatever has been authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) in terms of sayings, actions, or approvals constitutes a Sunna to be followed. As Allah The Exalted Says (What means): "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah often." [Al-Ahzab/21]. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
