Question :

I have been working for cans manufacturer for over a year. In the past, this company used to manufacture wine and beer cans, but now it manufactures soda cans. However, it manufactures wine and beer cans for one day of every year. When I took this job, I was told that the proportion of profits for this day is donated to charity and isn`t counted as part of company`s profits. I asked local and international houses of fatwa about the lawfulness of my work and was told that it is lawful. Nonetheless, a few days ago I received a piece of information stating that the profits obtained from producing the beer cans aren`t given to charity, so I asked the Finance Director about this and I realized that it was true. Although the company does charity work, there is no obligation to withdraw this amount from its account in case the beer cans were sold. In addition, the company obtains financial liquidity from someone`s bank account and repays with interest. It has also made a twenty-million-dollar deposit for which it receives interest. My question is: Should I quit or not knowing that my job responsibilities are confined to administrative affairs and human resources?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

If someone worked for an employer whose money is a mixture of the lawful and unlawful, his wages are lawful and had it not been for this rule, people`s business would have been destroyed. This is because the wealth of most people is a mixture of the lawful and unlawful. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
