Question :

Is it permissible to make supplication during the Witer(Uneven number of supererogatory prayer) prayer as is the case in Ramadan?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

The supplication that people via satellite TVs in Ramadan while Witer prayer is performed after bowing down is called Qunut supplication, according to Muslim jurists. Moreover, the first opinion of the Shafia' school of thought is that this supplication is made during Witer prayer at the second half of Ramadan since it is an act of Sunnah as done by the righteous companions who were used to making Qunut supplication during Omar Ibn Al-Khatab (May Allah be pleased with him) era and as Ali Ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah Ibn Omar (May Allah be pleased with them) used to do. For more details, kindly refer to [Al-Sunn Al-Khubra vol.2/pp.498] in the chapter "Qunut is only made at the second half of Ramadan" by Al-Imam Al- Byhaqee.

The second opinion of the aforementioned school : that Qunut supplication is permitted during the whole year and there is no harm in that, since Al-Imam An-Nawawi (May Allah have mercy on his soul) affirmed this opinion in his book [Al-Majmooa' vol.3/pp.510]in which it was stated: "Hanafi jurists used to making Qunut supplication while performing prayer before bowing down silently."

However, Muslim jurists abide by the supplication reported from the Prophet (PBUH) and the righteous companions. Yet, all Qunut supplications, as people hear from satellite TVs, aren't too long as stated in TVs.

Therefore, Muslims should abide by the supplications stated by the Prophet (PBUH). And Allah Knows Best..
