Question :

We have received a question from His Excellency Director General of the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization about the ruling of Sharia on using an enzyme obtained from porcine (Pig) pancreas in infant milk?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

It goes without saying that pig and its derivatives are forbidden by Quranic text. Allah the Almighty Says {What means}: "Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." {Al-Mai`da, 3}. However, if these derivatives are a medication for a disease that has no other cure, then they are permissible to use only for treatment, not for prevention.

Consequently, it isn`t permissible to import milk containing pig derivatives because it will be used by patients and non-patients. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
