Question :

After having performed obligatory Umrah, is it permissible for me to perform another Umrah (Minor pilgrimage) and give its reward to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him)?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of The Worlds. May His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Giving the reward of one`s righteous deeds to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) is a matter concerning which there is a difference of opinion amongst scholars. There are two views in this regard:

First: It isn`t permissible since no evidence was transmitted stating that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) permitted that. Another reason is that this implies that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) needs the righteous to give him the reward of their righteous deeds. Moreover, it goes without saying that the reward of the Muslim nation`s righteous deeds is recorded in the balance of the Prophet`s righteous deeds for he is the reason of their being guided to the straight path in the first place. An-Nawawi (May Allah have mercy on him): "Giving the reward for reciting the Quran to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) is unfounded and the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) didn`t permit that since the reward for recitation is already recorded in the Prophet`s balance of good deeds."

The Maliki scholar Ad-Dardeer stated: "Some of our Imams stated that reciting chapter al-Fatihah, for instance, and giving its reward to the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) is reprehensible." {Al-Shareh al-Kabeer Ma` Hashiyat Al-Daswookhi, vol.2, pp. 10}.

Second: It is permissible because it was transmitted that after the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away, Ibn Omar (May Allah be pleased with them) used to perform Omrah on his behalf and  there is no evidence prohibiting that. Moreover, this is permissible because there is evidence that in general it is permissible to perform Haj and obligatory fast on behalf of the dead. Al-Shirbin (May Allah have mercy on him) says: "Some scholars have permitted this such as Al-Sobkhi who based this on the fact that Ibn Omar, after the Prophet had passed away, used to offer Omrah on his behalf without having been told by the Prophet to do so. In his book {Al-Ehya`}, Al-Ghazali reported from Ibn Al-Mowafaq that he performed Haj on behalf of the Prophet for several times. It was also reported from Mohammad Bin Is-haaq An-Naysaboori that he recited the Quran on behalf of the Prophet more than ten thousand times and that he offered sacrifice on his behalf as well." {Moghni al-Mohtaaj, vol.4, pp.111}. Al-Bahooti, a Hanbali scholar, stated: "Giving the reward of any righteous deed to a Muslim, dead or alive, is permissible and benefits the latter in the sense that the reward reaches him/her and this even applies to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." {Khash`shaf al-Khina`, vol.2, pp.147}.
