Question :

Our Company is specialized in software development. Recently, we were asked to develop the software of a conventional bank to help clients open accounts there. What is the ruling of Sharia on that?

The Answer :

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

Islam has forbidden whatever directly helps in sin since Allah the Almighty says, " Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah. for Allah is strict in punishment."{Al-Mai`dah, 2}. Helping in Riba (usury/interest) is more prohibited than helping in other sins, because Riba is a major sin. The evidence on this is that Jabir said that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said: They are all equal."{Related by Muslim}.

In conclusion, if the above software helps in Riba-based transactions, such as opening accounts and calculating interests, then it isn`t permissible to develop it for that bank. And Allah the Almighty knows best.
