Subject : Made a Vow to Perform Hajj for this Year on Behalf of his Mother

Fatwa Number : 491

Date : 04-02-2010

Classified : Oaths and vows

Fatwa Type : Search Fatawaa

Question :

I made a vow to perform Hajj this year on behalf of my deceased mother although I have done that before. Is this permissible?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of The Worlds, and may His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all of his family and companions.

Whoever made a vow to perform the ritual of Hajj is obliged to fulfill it literally, so you (Questioner) are obliged to perform Hajj for this year. If you are able to do so but didn’t, then you won’t be cleared from liability before Allah. However, if you aren`t able to do so for this year then you won’t be called to account, even if  you are able to do so in the following year for it is no longer due on you. This is because the vow you made is for the current year and won’t be an obligation save if you make a new one for another year. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
