Subject : Is it Permissible to Take a Loan from a Usurious Bank to Complete Marriage Arrangements?

Fatwa Number : 481

Date : 02-02-2010

Classified : Usury (interest) &Loans

Fatwa Type : Search Fatawaa

Question :

I want to get married, but I might not be able to come up with the money needed to cover all the expenses. Is it permissible for me to take a loan from one of the usurious banks since here in Morocco there are no Islamic banks and I want to protect myself against falling into Zina (Adultery and fornication), which is wide spread here?

The Answer :

All perfect praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad and upon all his family and companions.

Resorting to usury for meeting a need complicates the problem instead of solving it. This is since the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) says [What means]: "No matter how much unlawful money multiplies, it eventually leads to poverty and misery." {Related by Imam Ahmad}. Scholars of Hadith have graded it as Sahih (Sound).

Ill-gotten money can never be a reason to be happy. Rather, it brings misery in the life of this world and the next.

Therefore, it is unlawful for you (Asker) to get a loan from a usurious bank for the purpose of meeting your need to marriage. Rather, you should resort only to lawful means and be content with the little. You should also remember that Almighty Allah Says {What means}: "Then, when they have reached their term, take them back in kindness or part from them in kindness, and call to witness two just men among you, and keep your testimony upright for Allah. Whoso believeth in Allah and the Last Day is exhorted to act thus. And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for him, And will provide for him from (a quarter) whence he hath no expectation. And whosoever putteth his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Lo! Allah bringeth His command to pass. Allah hath set a measure for all things." {At-Talaq, 2-3}. And Allah The Almighty Knows Best.
