Question :

I have found out that my wife was having an affair, do you recommend that I divorce her?

The Answer :

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the Worlds.

We pray that Allah helps you overcome this affliction and grants you strength since worldly life is the abode of trials where, sometimes, a person is tested with his household, but whoever relied upon Allah, He Will Suffice him. Nevertheless, we don`t recommend that you divorce her immediately. Rather, give her a chance to make repentance if you feel that she has true intention to do so. This is to free yourself from the guilt after she had crossed all the red lines. Anas (RAA) narrated that Allah's Messenger (PBUH) said: “All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” {Related by At•Tirmidhi}.

However, if you realized that she isn`t the right wife for you, can`t be trusted, didn`t accept her manners and attributes and made sure that she isn`t chaste, then you aren`t to blame for divorcing her since Allah, the Almighty, says, "But if they disagree (and must part), God will provide abundance for all from His all-reaching bounty: for God is He that careth for all and is Wise." {An-Nisa`, 130}.

Moreover, jurisprudents have stated that divorce becomes desirable; especially when the wife is "Unchaste." And Allah the Almighty Knows Best.
